  1. Chapter 6 - The Silent Shadow

Page 89

Before Russo could speak, Anna answered, “This is Officer Russo. He is the officer in charge of a case that took place here… ten years ago.”

Something flickered in Charles’s eyes—just for a second. A shadow of recognition, or maybe discomfort. But it vanished as quickly as it appeared.

“Ah,” he said smoothly. “Yes. That case… quite the tragedy. I remember the headlines.” He gave Russo a nod of professional respect. “It must be strange for you, returning here after all this time.”

Russo wondered silently why Anna had mentioned he was in charge of the case from ten years ago; nevertheless, he maintained his composure and continued with the act.

Russo’s voice was even. “Some places never leave you.”

Charles studied him for a moment, then gave a slight tilt of his head. “So… what has brought you back here?” he asked, voice calm but curious. “I assume it’s not just to see what the villa has turned into.”

Anna hesitated, exchanging a glance with Russo before answering. “You’re right. I’m looking into the disappearance of a woman who might be connected to what happened here ten years ago. We’re trying to understand what really happened back then… and maybe find a few answers.”

Charles’s expression didn’t change, but a flicker of something passed through his eyes. Recognition? Concern? Amusement? It was hard to tell.

Russo folded his arms. “It’s not an official investigation. Just trying to see if we can find anything useful.”

Charles nodded slowly, then turned to the woman at the front desk. “Maria, please prepare our two finest rooms—two nights, on the house. And let the staff know I’ll be giving a personal tour shortly.”

Anna raised an eyebrow. “That’s generous of you, but we didn’t come here to stay.”

Charles raised a hand gently. “I insist. You’ll find the nights in Evermoon different from anywhere else. Sometimes, staying helps the memories resurface. Besides, it’ll be easier to look around without rushing back to town. And sometimes what you’re looking for doesn’t reveal itself right away.”

Russo narrowed his eyes slightly. “You seem rather eager for us to stay.”
