David and Amelia stepped out of the cab, the crisp evening air carrying the faint scent of rain. The warm glow from the windows of the Lay residence contrasted against the cool night, a familiar comfort that made Amelia smile. She squeezed David’s hand before walking up the front steps and knocking on the door.
“Mum! Dad! We’re here!” she called out, her voice filled with excitement.
The door swung open after a few seconds, revealing Mrs. Lay with an apron still tied around her waist and a delighted smile on her face. “Oh, finally! Come in, come in! It’s been too long since I saw you both.”
Mr. Lay appeared behind her, adjusting his reading glasses as he grinned. “Look at you two! Amelia, you’ve lost weight. And David—still putting up with her, I see.”
David chuckled and hugged his father-in-law. “I wouldn’t have it any other way, sir.”
Amelia rolled her eyes playfully. “Dad, please.”
As they stepped inside, the house enveloped them in warmth. The smell of roasted lamb and fresh-baked bread filled the air, mingling with the faint crackle of a fireplace in the other room. The dining table was already set—elegant plates, wine glasses filled, and candlelight flickering gently against the polished wood.
Mrs. Lay fussed over Amelia’s coat, taking it from her and hanging it neatly. “Dinner is just about ready. You must be starving!”
David looked around and smiled. “It’s been a while, feels so good to be back.”
As they all sat down, laughter and conversation flowed easily. For a while, it felt like any other family gathering—warm, familiar, safe. But beneath Amelia’s smile, something lingered. A thought. A weight pressing on her mind.
She glanced toward the bag at her feet, where a copy of The Silent Shadow rested inside. Tonight, she would finally tell them what she had discovered.
“So, David, how is your business going?” Mr. Lay asked as he poured a cup of tea, the rich aroma of Earl Grey filling the cozy living room.
