"And it's hard not to believe that Amelia's disappearance is connected to Julian's death."
David nodded, his voice low.
"And I believe you've seen all the clues and information we've gathered. That's all we have for now."
Anna nodded slightly as she finished writing done some notes.
"So, everything seems to have started with that book Julian wrote, right?" She glanced at both men, her tone probing. "And you mentioned that Amelia found it outside her house one day — just like it's delivered by someone?"
Mr. Lay nodded. "Yeah, exactly," he said, his expression darkening. "She said it was just there, no note, no explanation. Like someone wanted her to have it."
"Okay, and according to the report, it says that the reason she started reading the book was because it’s strikingly similar to what happened at Evermoon twenty years ago?"
Both Lucian and David nodded in agreement.
"Yes," Lucian replied, his voice tinged with concern. "She was obsessed with the similarities. She thought it might hold some answers about who the real murderer was."
Anna raised an eyebrow, her tone inquisitive. "I’m a little curious," she said, glancing between them. "There’s nothing about the incident at Evermoon in the report. Can you tell me exactly what happened there?" And Anna’s mind raced for a moment, the name "Evermoon" stirring memories. She knew roughly what had happened there — she’d helped Julian with the book a few years ago. But the details had faded with time, and she needed a refresher. If this was truly connected to Amelia’s disappearance, she needed more than just the basics.
Mr. Lay exhaled deeply, as though bracing himself.
"It was about a janitor being murdered," he began, his voice heavy with the weight of the years. "A young man named Mark Jennings, a janitor at Evermoon, was found dead there twenty years ago. His body was discovered in his room, locked from the inside. The police quickly closed the case, pinning the murder on another janitor, a man named John Weck, who was accused of robbery and murder."
